The incident comes just weeks after a separate case in Selebi Phikwe in which a man allegedly killed his older brother, raising fresh concern over violent disputes within families.

Confirming the latest incident, Botshabelo Police Station commander, Superintendent Sedisa Malefo, said the police received a report about the incident on Friday, around 1:30 pm.

“We received a report that a man had allegedly chopped [hacked] his aunt on the head with an object suspected to be a spade, resulting in her death. Police officers rushed to the scene and found the elderly woman lying in a pool of blood with a deep head wound,” he said.

The victim was rushed to Selebi Phikwe Primary Hospital, where she was certified dead on arrival. Malefo stated that the attack occurred at the deceased’s homestead in Marubu Ward, Tobane.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the 39-year-old suspect had gone to visit his aunt, as they did not reside in the same yard.

“The cause of the misunderstanding that led to the fatal attack is still unknown at this stage. The suspect was arrested later that same afternoon and remains in police custody,' he said.

Malefo further stated that investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. The suspect is expected to appear before the court sometime this week, where he will face a single count of murder.
