Alliance Francaise hosts screening of 'Sugar, Stars'

The event brought together film enthusiasts and foodies alike, offering a unique opportunity to engage with Michelin-starred French chef Hubert Maetz.

The film tells the inspiring true story of Yazid Ichemrahen, a young man who overcame adversity to become a renowned pastry chef.

Growing up in a tough neighbourhood, Yazid found solace in cooking and baking, eventually landing an apprenticeship at a prestigious Parisian pastry shop.

Despite facing numerous challenges, his passion and dedication earned him a Michelin star, making him a role model for aspiring chefs.

Following the screening, Chef Maetz shared his own culinary journey, emphasising the importance of passion and perseverance in the kitchen.

'Cooking is about emotion and feelings. The best food is often the one you had when you were a kid, cooking with your mom,' he said, echoing Yazid's sentiments.

The audience was captivated by Chef Maetz's insights into the world of French cuisine, and his collaboration with the Gaborone College of Culinary Arts students added a special touch to the evening.

The event showcased the rich cultural exchange between France and Botswana, highlighting the power of food and film to bring people together.



The screening was part of a month-long celebration of Francophonic Month, featuring various events, including film screenings, live music, and culinary workshops.

The Alliance Francaise de Gaborone continues to promote cultural diversity and exchange, offering a platform for artists and food enthusiasts to connect.

Meanwhile, Chef Monana Motswaledi, founder of Gaborone College of Culinary Arts, expressed her gratitude to the Alliance Francaise de Gaborone for hosting the event.

'We are thrilled to have had the opportunity to host such talented chefs and look forward to future collaborations,' she said.
