Matlhare is alleged to have been found in possession of the diamonds on or about March 12, 2026, at Doppio Zero. According to the charge sheet, he was not authorised or exempt in any manner to possess the precious stones.

The state alleges that the diamonds weighed a combined 3.17 carats and are valued at P7,490.65.

When the matter came before the court, the prosecution opposed bail, arguing that releasing the accused at this stage could compromise ongoing investigations that have already yielded new leads.

“We wish to state that investigations in this matter are ongoing and significant progress has been made so far,” the prosecutor submitted.

The court heard that during questioning, Matlhare allegedly provided information that led investigators to other individuals who may be linked to the case. One such individual has already been located and interviewed, with authorities indicating that further developments have since emerged and require additional inquiry.

Investigators have also secured multiple mobile phones believed to be relevant to the case. These include the accused’s handset, two other devices, and a phone linked to another suspect who is yet to be arrested. Police further extended their search to Tsabong, where they retrieved a phone belonging to the accused’s mother as part of efforts to piece together evidence.

The state maintained that these developments point to a broader investigation that is still active and sensitive. “In this regard, the fear of the state is that if the accused is granted bail, he may tamper with investigations and potential witnesses,” the prosecutor argued.

The prosecution further emphasised that some suspects connected to the matter have not yet been apprehended, and key evidence is still being analysed, making it critical for investigators to proceed without interference.

Presiding magistrate Tshepo Thedi agreed with the state’s submissions and ruled in favour of remanding the accused in custody. The court also directed the police to expedite their investigations and bring the matter to a conclusion.

The case continues.
