Delivering the keynote address, the Minister of Health, Dr Stephen Modise, emphasised the importance of the NHI policy, stating that it underscores the government's commitment to uplifting the health and well-being of every Motswana.

'Healthcare is no mere service; it is the bedrock of dignity, equity, and our nation's progress,' he said.

The workshop brought together stakeholders from various sectors, including government, private sector, technical experts, and civil society, to validate the draft NHI policy. The policy aims to ensure that every Motswana has access to quality, affordable healthcare without suffering financial hardship.

Minister Modise highlighted the challenges facing Botswana's healthcare system, including uneven access, fragmented financing, and persistent inequalities. He emphasised that the NHI policy is a bold step towards addressing these challenges and achieving UHC.

The NHI policy proposes a compulsory system in which those with greater means support those with less, and allows medical aids to coexist as complementary schemes. The policy also aims to improve efficiency, accountability, and governance in the health sector.

In his welcome remarks, NHI Senior Consultant Lydia Andries emphasised the workshop's significance, noting that it represents a shared national platform to shape the future of healthcare in Botswana.

The validated policy will inform the development of the NHI Bill, which will be tabled before Parliament. Minister Modise urged stakeholders to engage frankly and constructively, stating that the decisions taken will shape the future of healthcare in Botswana for generations to come.

The workshop is part of the government's efforts to reform the health sector and achieve UHC. The NHI policy is expected to drive transformation across the entire health sector, improving infrastructure, workforce, and supply chains, and enhancing governance and accountability.

The event was attended by various dignitaries, including government officials, private sector representatives, and development partners. The validated policy is expected to be a significant step towards achieving Botswana's vision of a healthier and more productive nation.
