Open up more about 2028 AFCON bid

To date, public details have been sparse, which risks dragging the bid back into the dark days of the 2027 botched effort which gave birth to all sorts of conspiracy theories, which remain unresolved up to this day. A more transparent approach is essential, particularly that some had rubbished the 2027 bid as unreasonable at the time. There is need to build confidence and lay out a clear plan that has the nation's buy in.

First, operational readiness depends on early, concrete planning. Hosting AFCON requires stadiums that meet Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards, adequate training facilities, transport infrastructure, accommodation, and security arrangements.

Without published assessments or timelines, potential gaps cannot be identified and addressed. There were critics who argued that Botswana would not be in a position to host the 2027 showpiece given the monumental budget and infrastructure upgrades required. The nation should be told what is different this time around.

What are the project figures, as financial transparency builds trust and enables better planning. Major sporting events require public spending and private sector investment. If those behind the bid present only vague commitments, there would be mistrust and the nation could witness another still born.

Government has always emphasised that it values consultation, and there should be wider stakeholder engagement by now, which in the end could point if it is a priority to host the AFCON or not.

Laying clear outlines and benefits will help in this regard, more so that Botswana's bid reportedly involves a number of countries and could therefore be lighter on the pocket compared to the previous solo effort.

Competition for AFCON hosting rights is intense and strategic clarity matters. Botswana’s bid must present detailed documentation on venues, logistics and financial guarantees to be taken seriously. Remaining largely speculative weakens will not help as CAF moves closer to making its determination.

Authorities behind the bid, should, as a matter of urgency, share relevant bid documents with timelines. What are the stadium plans, and budget estimates, et cetera. Another way could be setting up a committee responsible for engaging the wider public. After-all it is the public that should own the project not the other way round. By transitioning from speculation to structured disclosure, this ca strengthen the bid project.

Otherwise, if it fails, the people will disown the project and the circle of conspiracy theories will continue as it has done since the unsuccessful 2027 bid.
