Ovaherero Youth Council embraces heritage

The event to be held in Mahalapye at Lorna Farms on March 28, 2026, promises to be a memorable showcase of Herero traditions, music, and heritage, as the community comes together to reconnect with its roots.
'We are creating a platform for leadership development, cultural preservation, unity, and socio-economic empowerment,' says Eric Kuaima, president of the OYC. 'Our goal is to reconnect young people with their heritage while preparing them to contribute meaningfully to their communities and the nation,' said Kuaima.
The inauguration will feature an array of traditional performances, including Herero hymns performed by choirs, traditional music, and cultural entertainment. Local artists will also take to the stage, showcasing their talents and adding to the vibrant atmosphere.
Attendees can expect to see the iconic Victorian-inspired dresses, a symbol of Herero identity and pride, as well as an array of traditional art and crafts. 'The event will provide a platform for showcasing traditional Herero attire, as well as cultural expression through art and crafts,' says Kuaima.
The OYC is committed to addressing the challenges faced by the Herero community, including preserving their land and cultural heritage. 'The inauguration creates a platform for dialogue, reflection, and strategic planning on issues affecting Ovaherero youth,' says Kuaima.
The event will also provide opportunities for cultural exchange and education, bringing together youth from different regions to share experiences and deepen their understanding of Ovaherero culture and traditions.
Visitors to the inauguration will experience authentic Ovaherero culture, gaining a unique insight into Herero heritage. 'It offers a unique cultural experience and an opportunity to learn about Herero heritage firsthand,' says Kuaima.
The OYC's efforts align with the government's initiatives to promote cultural tourism in Botswana. 'The event supports cultural tourism by showcasing Botswana's diverse heritage,' says Kuaima.
