Keneilwe Pono Patricia Lephoi, a journalist with YTV, has been named Overall Winner at the inaugural Marang Fund Media Awards, recognising outstanding journalism advancing LGBTIQ rights and inclusion across Southern Africa.

Lephoi’s work stood out for its depth, impact, and commitment to amplifying marginalised voices, marking a significant milestone in promoting diverse and inclusive storytelling in the region. The awards were presented for the first time as part of the long-running Voice and Choice Summit hosted by Gender Links. They honour impactful reporting from countries where the Marang Fund operates, including Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, Madagascar, and Mauritius.

The recognition highlights journalism that challenges harmful attitudes, promotes diversity, and contributes to both policy dialogue and social change. Speaking after receiving the award, Lephoi said the recognition affirms the importance of her work.

“This award gives me hope and shows that the work I am doing matters, especially competing alongside international journalists who had to defend their stories before a panel of judges,” she said.

Lephoi shared top honours in her category, tying with Rethabile Mohono of Public Eye in Lesotho, while runner-up honours went to Philippine Rasoafara of Madagascar.

Despite the competitive field, she acknowledged the strength of all participants.

“I think we all did well, but there has to be a winner,” she added.

Lephoi said the achievement has further motivated her to continue using journalism as a tool for advocacy and transformation.

Through her storytelling, she remains committed to driving change within communities and amplifying the voices of marginalised groups across the region
