The foetus was reportedly retrieved from a dog that is suspected to have been feeding on the remains, with one of the unborn baby's hands already eaten.
According to the police, the matter came to light after a passerby noticed a dog carrying what appeared to be a baby. Alarmed by what he saw, the passerby quickly alerted the police.
Confirming the incident in an interview, Mogoditshane Police Station acting commander, Assistant Superintendent Mompoloki Ramaphoi, said investigations are ongoing as officers work to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify the mother.
Ramaphoi added that the discovery has raised serious concern within the service, especially because it is not the first such case reported in his policing area this year.
He noted that it remains unclear why some women choose to dump their babies, adding that authorities suspect that in some cases the pregnancies may have been close to full term.
Ramaphoi further appealed to members of the public who might have information that could help identify the mother to report to the nearest police station.
