After the children had been quiet for some time, the deceased’s mother and the other child’s mother became concerned and started looking for them around the yard.
Their search ended in tragedy when they found the boy’s legs hanging outside the bucket, whilst his upper body was submerged in the water.
The other child was reportedly standing next to the toddler who drowned inside the same bucket, which contained dirty water behind the house.
Mogoditshane Police Station acting commander, Assistant Superintendent Mompoloki Ramaphoi, said the toddler was rushed to Nkoyaphiri Clinic, where he was certified dead on arrival by the doctors.
Ramaphoi implored parents and guardians of young children to always exercise caution and ensure proper safety precautions at home.
He emphasised the importance of constant supervision, especially for toddlers, warning that even small amounts of water in containers such as buckets can pose danger to young children.
