Police in the area said the Saturday overnight rains left three families homeless, and others crowded in a single hut after their houses collapsed due to flooding.
Maunatlala Police Station commander, Superintendent Omphile Galani, told The Monitor that some affected families have since been forced to crowd into remaining houses after losing their homes.
“Three families lost their houses due to the floods and are currently being accommodated by other families in the village,” he explained.
Despite the damage, Galani said no injuries were reported.
“Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident,” he added.
He explained that most of the houses that collapsed were traditional mud structures, which could not withstand the heavy rains and flooding.
Galani further noted that the floods also affected Seolwane and the nearby Lerala village, where overflowing streams caused water to spill onto roads, making travel difficult and dangerous.
“The situation was bad as only big trucks could pass through on parts of the road because the water had covered the main road leading to the border,” he said.
However, he said the situation had improved by Monday morning as the water levels had started to subside.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as affected families seek alternative shelter.
