Hogs produced a commanding 33-5 victory over their opponent at Touch Down ground, outclassing the Palapye-based side in most facets of the game, scoring six tries.

Despite being dominated, BIUST player coach, Kgosi Kale told Sport Monitor that they were trying a new squad, seeing where the new players are comfortable to play.

That worked for the 20 minutes of the first half, being able to hold off Hogs to a 0-0 scoreline, he said.

Kale revealed that preparing for the tournament was tough because of the students strike that was happening at BIUST campus.

“We then lost momentum, I guess we got excited and Hogs used that loophole. It is always difficult to play against Hogs, we tried to get back in the second half. Fitness wise, I would say we are almost there. “We have some players that we are introducing to rugby and some had quit five years ago,” he said.

Kale added that last season, the first game was still against Hogs in Palapye, which they lost 10-7, although it was a good game. In another encounter, Jaguars edged BU Ryders 22-0 played at the same venue.

Ryders showed determination despite not being able to score, taking the war to their opponents until the last whistle.

Jaguars scrum half, Ishmael Chyna Pelaelo said they knew it was going to be a scrappy game from the get go, adding that Ryders is a team that plays off from scrappy movement and they are not a team that align well.

He said their opponents just wanted to disrupt play of rags, the game becomes scrappy. “All we needed to do was to get the ball off the rags fast and play quick ball and get them on the back foot and that helped us. We knew that once they get penalised, they will get frustrated and we will use that to our advantage,” he said.

For his part, Ryders coach, Kgoboko Kgoboko said it was first game of the season, lot of mistakes, but all fun game because there young players coming in and it was nice to test them against a difficult team like Jaguars.

He noted that the lack of scoring tries is something to note down, but take the progress to build for the future.

“Ryders has gone for a long time without winning a silverware, we want to create a new legacy, at least finish in top four.

“Ahead of this match, preparations were difficult because we train in a tennis court, but we have to maximise with what we have,” said Kgoboko.
