In one case, a 46-year-old man was robbed of P5,600 in cash in Borakalalo Ward. According to the Lekgwapheng Police Station commander, Mothosera Busang, the recent incidents reflect a troubling trend in the village.
“These two cases are not isolated. We have been recording between two and three robbery cases every week. In most instances, victims are attacked by groups of young men. We suspect a group of six to seven individuals may be behind these incidents,” Busang said.
He explained that the first incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, around 3 am, outside a local club in Borakalalo Ward. The victim had just exited the club and was about to enter his vehicle when he was ambushed.
“As he opened his car door, three men attacked him. One allegedly held a knife to his neck, warning him not to make any noise, whilst the others demanded cash. They took his mobile phone and searched him for money before fleeing the scene,” Busang said.
He added that the victim was not physically injured, as he complied with the attackers’ demands.
In a separate incident reported later that morning, around 6 am, a 43-year-old man was attacked at a bus stop near Kgari Sechele Senior Secondary School. The suspects, also described as three young men, robbed him of his mobile phone.
“The victim managed to scream for help, prompting nearby community members to respond swiftly. They managed to arrest one of the suspects and reported the matter to the police,” Busang said.
The arrested suspect is currently in police custody, assisting with investigations.
Busang noted that police suspect the arrested individual may be linked to a group believed to be terrorising residents.
He assured the public that efforts are ongoing to track down the remaining suspects.
“We believe this individual may be part of the group responsible for these crimes. However, this will be confirmed once investigations are complete and we have arrested the other suspects,” he said.
