Confirming the incident, Mogoditshane Police Station acting commander, Assistant Superintendent Mompoloki Ramaphoi, said the two victims were standing at a bus stop near Mmankadile Grounds, waiting for public transport with other commuters when the storm began. He said the police received the report at around 6 pm.

“A sudden lightning strike hit them whilst it was raining. The victims were a 46-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man,” Ramaphoi said.

He explained that an ambulance was immediately called, and both victims were rushed to Julia Molefe Clinic. However, the woman was certified dead on arrival by the doctors.

“The woman was coming from church and was waiting to catch a combi home when she met her untimely death,” he added.

Ramaphoi further stated that the injured man was later referred to Sidilega Private Hospital before being transferred to Princess Marina Hospital for further treatment and assessment by a heart specialist.

He noted that other people who were at the bus stop at the time of the incident escaped uninjured.
