Confirming the incident, Mogoditshane Police Station acting commander, Assistant Superintendent Mompoloki Ramaphoi, said the fire was first noticed by an employee at the garage in the early hours of the morning.
“The employee reported that he heard a sound similar to an explosion whilst asleep at around 2am. When he went outside to check, he found vehicles on fire and immediately reported the matter to the police. Police officers and the Fire department rushed to the scene and attempted to extinguish the blaze. However, by the time the fire was brought under control, 15 vehicles had already been destroyed,' Ramaphoi said.
Ramaphoi explained that the owner of the storage, a 47-year-old man who owns a vehicle towing company, said the vehicles being kept in storage were those involved in road accidents.
“They were stored in one area, and the fire was confined to that section only. We suspect that the fire may have been deliberately started,” he said.
He added that no injuries were reported during the incident. Ramaphoi stated that investigations are ongoing to establish the exact cause of the fire and to identify and arrest the suspect or suspects involved.
