Mogoditshane Police Station acting commander, Assistant Superintendent Mompoloki Ramaphoi, said police received a tip-off and immediately rushed to the scene, where they found the farmer in the act of slaughtering the animal.
He said officers were accompanied by veterinary officials, who confiscated the cow carcass. The suspect was subsequently charged and fined for failing to comply with animal health regulations.
Ramaphoi urged members of the public, particularly farmers, to adhere to the current restrictions aimed at containing the spread of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).
“Members of the public and farmers should understand that slaughtering is currently on hold as the government is working tirelessly to curb the spread of FMD countrywide. FMD affects everyone, and if people comply with the regulations, the disease can be contained within the shortest possible time,” he said.
The government has imposed strict measures, including restrictions on animal movement and slaughtering, whilst vaccination programmes continue in affected areas.
Police have reiterated that failure to comply with the regulations may result in fines or prosecution, and have appealed for cooperation in safeguarding the country’s livestock industry.
