Lobatse Sports Complex track comes alive

The competition was an opportunity for athletes to gauge themselves as they prepare for the season. Some were pushing themselves for a slot in the final team of the World Athletics Relays Gaborone 26 set for May 2 to 3 at the National Stadium. One of the hightlights of the event was Prince Selepe of Jwaneng athletics club who powered to the fastest time in the men’s 150m heat three clocking 15.27.
He was followed by Justice Oratile stopping the clock in 15.40 and Tumo Stagato Van Wyk of Sports View Runners Club finished third in 15.52.
Lee Bhekempile Eppie of Orapa athletics club won the men’s 600m heat one stopping the clock at 1:16.68 with Collen Busang Kebinatshipi of Jwaneng athletics club coming second in 1:16.70.
Heat three was won by Boitumelo Masilo clocking 1:16.76, Clifton Meshack of Lions Den athletics club finished second with a time of 1:16.80 while Taelo Shashmpa came third in 1:18.79.
Golekanye Chikani won the women’s 600m heat one in 1:33.40 followed by Boemo Dikole in 1:35.94 and the third spot was claimed by Gaolape Senyama of Maun track and field club in 1:36.97. The 14-year-old, Kelly Makwala of The Isaac Makwala Athletics Academy (TIMAA), delivered a massive personal best (PB) of 40.79 in 300m.
The event organiser, Chilume Ntshwarang told Sport Monitor that athletes delivered spectacular performance throughout the day. He said fast times in both 300m for men and women were registered. “We also had notable performances in the 150m across all categories. We have a lot talent in athletics,an indication that coaches are working hard in their respective clubs. All we need is support to continue with unveiling talents out there,” he said.
“Of course there were some lessons that we picked and will correct in the next event. We should also work on our marketing the event and even attract sponsors.”
For his part, Eppie said he was trying to check how his training has been going since they started preparations, and wanted to see where he should improve moving forward.
He said the race was not about competition but to correct and implement some tactics. Chikani who won the 600m heat one said she delivered the race according to the plan she had with her coach.

Women’s 300m: heat one: Position one: Tshiamo Gaebolae (41.47), position two: Pearl Kgotlane (42.36) and position three: Magdeline Chakalisa (43.21). Heat two: Obakeng Kamberuka (36.77), Loungo Matlhaku (42.36) and Karabo Mantswinyane (39.35). Men’s 60m: heat two: Calvin Omphile (6.58), Thapelo Monaiwa (6.65) and Oratile (6.74).
