The Reds were made to work for their supper but eventually saw off a stubborn Santa Green 2–0 in a Wednesday night clash at the GU Stadium. Second-half strikes from Mpho Kgaswane and Mothusi Johnson kept GU marching on, stretching their remarkable unbeaten league run to 26 matches dating back to last season.

GU also smiled at results elsewhere as closest challengers Jwaneng Galaxy dropped points in a 1–1 away draw against Orapa United, allowing the champions to widen the cushion at the summit with 13 games still to play.

Interim coach, Khalid Niyonzima, warned that the business end of the season will be no stroll in the park despite the growing advantage.

“The second round is always tough because everyone is desperate for points.

“We created many chances and could have scored five or six, but the important thing is the three points and extending the lead. That is our objective,” said Niyonzima. Next up for the high-flying Reds is a tricky Sunday afternoon date against Police XI at the GU Stadium at 4pm.

The clash pits GU’s title charge against the Jungle Kings’ survival battle. GU have been ruthless this season with 13 wins from 17 matches, just four draws, a league-best 33 goals scored and a miserly seven conceded as they carry the numbers that scream champions-in-waiting.

Police XI, however, are clinging to hope. Although recently enjoying a five-game unbeaten spell, defined mostly by draws, the Cops slipped again midweek with a 1–0 loss to struggling Extension Gunners. They sit just above the relegation danger zone and face the league’s meanest defence with the worst attack that scored only six goals scored all season. It is a classic case of unstoppable force versus desperate resistance at the GU Stadium.

Elsewhere this weekend, Matebele FC will look to extend their fine run to four straight wins when they meet Black Lions at the GU Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Morupule Wanderers host BDF XI in Palapye, while Extension Gunners travel to face Sua Flamingoes in Sowa. All the games kick off at 7pm.

Galaxy will attempt to keep their title dreams alive against struggling TAFIC at the Galaxy Stadium at 7pm before Township Rollers clash with Orapa United an hour later at the GU Stadium at 8pm. Sunday’s action sees Nico United welcome Calendar Stars at Sam Sono Stadium, while Mochudi Centre Chiefs take on Santa Green in Palapye as Miguel Corral Torreira’s men chase a fourth consecutive victory.
