BDP Steeps Candidacy Fees

'Following our just ended BDP National Council in which a resolution to look into the possibilities of increasing the primary elections fees was passed, the central committee has considered and (agreed) that the fees be increased,' the statement says.

Fees for local council aspirants have trebled from P500 to P1 500. In an interview with the Monitor, Serema said the hiking of the fees was an effort to raise funds ahead of the 2009 elections and that most of the money would be used to run the party's primary elections.

Serema said the BDP was expecting an estimated 160 parliamentary applications for Parliament and 900 for local councils.

'We predict a large turnout, especially at council level where we normally have about eight people contesting for one ward,' he said.

Meanwhile, the party's treasurer, Satar Dada, is asking for P5000 from each constituency for a retirement package for President Mogae. The BDP plans to buy a car for Mogae when he leaves office.
