The accused, Tebo Molebeledi, said he was the one who took the victim to the hospital and thereafter reported himself to the police.

According to his charge sheet, on September 30, 2025, at Morwamoswe village, Molebeledi unlawfully assaulted Becky Bakganedi with a metal rod on the head, thereby occasioning her actual bodily harm.

Following his imprisonment, Molebeledi is now fighting for his freedom. He wants to wait for trial outside prison.

Thirty-five-year-old Becky Bakganedi took to the stand on Friday to testify against her ex-boyfriend, who assaulted her last Independence Day.

In court, Bakganedi took the court down memory lane of what had happened to her. She said that after a day out with her then-boyfriend and siblings, Molebeledi attacked her at a bus stop.

“I blacked out, so I don’t remember much except that I woke up in the hospital,” she shared.

Punching holes into the case, the defence lawyer argued that because the victim did not know what happened and was in no position to claim she was attacked by the accused.

To which she responded, “I do know he hit me with something that led me to faint. Everything else in terms of what happened afterwards, I was told by my sisters who were there during the assault.”

The defence had argued that by the act of actively being involved in taking her to hospital and thereafter reporting himself to the police, it showed that the accused was 'an honourable man' of exceptional character.

“We want to put it to the court that after the incident happened, he (the accused) was the first to react. Not her siblings, who were there at the time. He was the first to react to the condition of the complainant, and he took her to the hospital and then reported himself to the police. If he intended to kill, why would he have the obligation to make sure she received medical attention?” the defence argued.

The defence also told the court that the accused should be granted bail as he needs to meet his obligation of caring for the child the couple shares.

“For the 11 years we have been together, he has never assisted me financially. He has never taken care of our child, so why would it start now? I plead with the court not to grant him bail,” responded the victim.

Her brother Osiile Katai also took the stand to plead with the court to deny him bail. He says he has read and seen similar instances where accused persons are granted bail, only for them to commit 'even worse crimes'. “I have seen it many times when conditions of bail are set, and they are breached,” he told the court. Ruling in the matter has been set for February 13, 2026.
