Constituency Community Project is a government initiative aimed at empowering communities and strengthening the process by which citizens take the lead in the development of their localities. In his remarks at the official opening of the store, Gerald Estate's Kgosi Motlatsi Kediseng stated that the community has long suffered from a lack of retail stores for the last few decades.
He credited the local leadership, including the ward development committee members, for their role in constructing a shopping complex through the CCP. 'The new Choppies branch will employ 70 locals, including youth, and create indirect jobs for vendors, hawkers, taxi, and combi operators,' he said. The Assistant Minister of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Ignitius Moswaane, praised Choppies for investing in local communities. He said that Choppies is a proudly homegrown brand that has grown beyond our borders, yet continues to invest meaningfully in local communities. He stated that retail developments such as this one play a critical role in economic development.
“They create employment, stimulate local enterprise, and improve access to affordable goods and services. This superstore has already created jobs for our people, especially the youth, and will continue to generate both direct and indirect employment opportunities,” he added. He further acknowledged that this development was made possible through CCP funds, spearheaded by the Ward Development Committees (WDC) jointly. This stands as a powerful example of how community-led planning, supported by government funding mechanisms, can attract meaningful private-sector investment and deliver tangible development outcomes for our people, he added.
Beyond employment, Moswaane indicated that the presence of this store brings convenience closer to where people live. “Families no longer have to travel long distances to access essential goods. This contributes to improved quality of life and allows residents to spend more time on productive and meaningful activities,” he added.
He stated that the government remains committed to creating an enabling environment for business growth. Additionally, he said they recognise that the private sector is a key partner in national development. Sustainable economic growth can only be achieved when government, business, and communities work together in harmony, he added.
He further stated that this development aligns with our broader national goals of economic diversification, citizen economic empowerment, and inclusive growth. According to Moswaane, Francistown West is a constituency with immense potential. “It is characterised by hardworking people, growing residential areas, and increasing demand for services and infrastructure. Developments such as this one affirm that our constituency is open for business and ready for investment,” he added.
