Following a reported outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in the North East District, the government has suspended the slaughtering of cloven-hoofed animals for personal consumption at social events such as weddings and funerals.

In a press release, acting Director of Veterinary Services Kobedi Segale said the decision follows investigations that confirmed an outbreak of FMD in the district.

“Additional prevention measures include prohibition of transportation, movement, or slaughter of cloven-hoofed animals, including for personal consumption or social events such as weddings, funerals, and megoga countrywide, except in Zones 1 (Chobe) and 2 (Ngamiland),” Segale said.

Batswana have been advised to strictly comply with the restrictions and report any signs of illness in livestock to the nearest veterinary office.
