More to be charged in Moagi's corruption case

Heads are expected to roll in the corruption case against former Minister of Minerals and Energy Lefoko Moagi after the State revealed that more people will be charged.

The former minister was charged with corruption this morning. Moagi cut a lonely figure behind the dock this morning as he appeared on two separate cases of corruption.

Clad in a dark blue suit, Moagi who has been the subject of media headlines on alleged corruption was arraigned before court and, his charge sheet was finally read before him. In the first case Moagi is faces a single count of corruption.

According to his charge sheet, prosecutors state that on or about April 17, 2024, the former Minister accepted for himself P4.7 million from New Energy Company Pty Ltd, via Wisecreatives Investments Pty Ltd,as a reward for issuing prospecting licences for base metals to New Energy. The licences were issued in Gantsi, Tsabong and Tutume.

On the second case, Moagi faces two counts being corruption and money laundering.

However, the state say they are not done, more heads are expected to roll, “In all likelihood, when the investigations are completed, we will have more than one accused person in the dock,' State lawyer said.

The state further told presiding Regional Magistrate Mareledi Dipate that investigations into the matter area ongoing. The State lawyers however said they will furnish the defence with all material by March 12 to prepare their defence.

In the end, after the State unopposed bail, Moagi was granted conditional bail of P5,000.00. Moagi was also asked to provide two sureties and that he must advise investigating officers should he wish to travel across the border

The case continues for status hearing March 31, 2026.
