"That was only 5% of us,” Monene warns rivals

The Red Roses opened their Southern Stream campaign in ruthless fashion at Galaxy Stadium, pulling away in the second half to register a commanding victory that underlined their title credentials in the newly structured women’s league.

The opening exchanges reflected a league still shaking off pre-season rust, with most teams having had limited preparation time. The first half was cagey, short on tempo and clear chances, and ended goalless.

GU shifted gears after the break. Eight minutes into the second half, Jessica Modise broke the deadlock with a composed finish to give the visitors control. From there, it was largely one-way traffic as GU dictated possession and territory.

Lesego Radiakanyo doubled the lead in the 71st minute, using blistering pace and clever footwork to beat her marker before finding the net.

Three minutes later, Nancy Baeletsi all but settled the contest with a well-taken third goal. Gaonyadiwe Ontlametse completed the rout in the 87th minute, finishing from close range to cap a dominant second-half display.

Despite the emphatic scoreline, Monene cut a measured and almost dismissive figure on the touchline afterwards.

“Sometimes you play badly and when you play badly you have to grind results,” Monene said.

“We did not play our normal game. Everyone knows we can pass the ball, but what people saw here is not what we can do.

“This is only about five percent of what we are capable of. We will take the win and improve in the next game.”

The result sees GU move into fourth place on the log after the opening weekend. Zodiac Collab Girls sit top after a staggering 13–0 win over Ghanzi Swallows.

BDF XI are second following a 6–0 victory over Western Zebras, while Double Action occupy third after beating Royal Fighters 5–0. In another fixture, Makgabz City edged El Ports 1–0.
