Goodhope Police Station commander, Superintendent Mogogi Mathaba, said the tragedy occurred on Friday following an episode that upset the deceased.
According to Mathaba, the deceased had been cleaning the house earlier that day when a disagreement arose after her cousin accidentally spilt sugar. It is alleged that the teenager reacted angrily by taking food from the cousin and throwing it away.
“She was later confronted by her aunt, who is also her guardian, regarding the incident. She allegedly left the yard that afternoon whilst still upset, and went into the nearby bush where she was later discovered,' he said.
The deceased was rushed to Goodhope Primary Hospital, where she was certified dead on arrival. Police investigations into the matter are ongoing.
Mathaba appealed to parents and guardians to pay close attention to their children’s behaviour and emotional well-being.
“Parents should be observant of their children’s moods and character changes so that they can identify when they are troubled and intervene before such tragic decisions are made,” he said.
