Police are urging motorists to exercise patience and caution to avoid fatal accidents.

In an interview with MmegiOnline, Dibete Police Station commander, Superintendent Keogaile Tau, said traffic was particularly heavy from south to north from as early as 5am. He said the volume of vehicles was so high that officers struggled to stop motorists to deliver road safety messages.

“It has been heavy to a point that we even struggled to stop them one by one and give them road safety messages. The situation improved slightly, and traffic was still flowing steadily at around 11:30am. We have not recorded any accidents so far, but we plead with motorists to remain cautious on the road,” Tau said.

He revealed that overspeeding, drunken driving and unsafe overtaking remain the leading causes of fatal road accidents, especially during the festive season. Tau appealed to drivers to observe speed limits, overtake only when it is safe to do so and to refrain from consuming alcohol until they have reached their destinations.

Tau also cautioned motorists to be vigilant as recent rains have left most of the busy A1 road with potholes, which pose a serious hazard to road users
