The six Mexican nationals, namely, Gumecindo Enrique (61), Jose Pena (48), Fansico Alejandro (33), Jose Corrales (39), Carlos Aguilar (32), and David Teran (26), were arrested on November 25 in Gaborone.

The six were arrested alongside a Nigerian man, Uchema Njoku (53), who has been charged with aiding and abetting crime by allegedly assisting suspects to illegally enter the country.

Appearing before the court today, the State Prosecutor Keletso Kgati revealed before the court that the sextet’s stay in Botswana runs deeper than they had imagined before.

Kgati said that following further investigations by the Investigating Officer, it appeared that the group was on the run.

“During further investigations with Interpol, we found out that the six Mexican nationals have two or three charges they are facing in Mozambique, and they are now on the run after they were given bail,” she said.

Kgati further revealed that back in Mozambique, the sextet is alleged to be drug kingpins as they are alleged to have set up a drug lab, which is operated by them.

“It has been established that the group is facing drug-related charges in Mozambique, and it is alleged by Interpol that the group has set up a drug lab from there that they operate from,” Kgati said.

In light of this, Kgati said the State will liaise with Interpol to repatriate the Mexican to face their crimes in Mozambique too. The State further revealed that the accused persons were found with an undisclosed amount of cash, which they failed to account for.

“We are further investigating the matter to find out where the group got the money they were found with, as to date, they have not accounted for it,” she said.

For the Nigerian national who was granted bail on the last sitting, Kgati said before the court that the State might slap Njoku with more charges. “We are thinking of adding two or three more charges to the Nigerian, thus meaning we will amend the charge sheet,” she said.

Given the chance to say anything by Chief Magistrate, Kamogelo Mmesi the six Mexican nationals only requested to be given back their properties, which include their clothes.

The State yielded to the defence’s plea but highlighted that their travel documents will remain with the police pending investigations. The Nigerian national, on the other hand, only made a plea for bail terms to be amended so that he reports himself to Serowe or Palapye Police Station during the festive season to join his family. He is married to a Motswana woman.

Factoring all sides put forward during the Status updates, Magistrate Mmesi set a new date for a mention. “The case is postponed to January 19, 2026, for status update, and all six Mexican nationals are further remanded in custody while the Nigerian national’s bails are amended and he can report himself to any police station in Botswana,” she ordered.
