She was discovered dead on Monday morning, with her body already decomposed.

Superintendent Mothusi Phadi, the commander of Tshesebe police station, said the woman is believed to have died several days earlier.

“Judging by the state of the body, we suspect that the elderly woman might have passed on either on Friday or Saturday,” Phadi said.

He added that, at this stage, 'the police do not suspect any foul play'.

A pathologist has been engaged to conduct a post-mortem examination at the scene, after which the body will be buried immediately due to its condition.

Phadi used the death to appeal to families and communities to regularly check on elderly relatives and neighbours, especially those living alone.

“It is important for families to make it a habit to check on one another, even through phone calls, so that they are aware of each other’s well-being,” he said. Police investigations into the matter are continuing.
