The event was held in Tlokweng on Wednesday, December 10, 2025.

Morwadi Mosenki, operations director of Serenity, underscored the critical need for such services in Botswana’s communities. 'Mental health has been taken for granted, especially amongst elderly people, leading to conditions like dementia, due to lack of recreational activities and social engagement, hence we at Serenity come in,” said Mosenki. She added that the organisation’s mandate is to rejuvenate individuals so they can live dignified, active lives and reintegrate into society as mentally well citizens.

Mosenki says she began her career as a public health nurse, gaining extensive experience both within Botswana’s government health services and through international programs abroad. Mosenki said her background has enabled her to guide Serenity’s impactful work in the country.

The newly launched day care centre is designed to support elderly individuals who often become restless, lonely, or mentally challenged due to the loss of spouses or a decrease in social interactions. “The day care is to care for elders, especially this festive season, as their caretakers and loved ones travel to different destinations, and they end up missing or improperly taking their medication,” Mosenki explained.

Mosenki further emphasised that the centre is a leading force in preventing the spread of communicable and non-communicable diseases. It also fights against drug abuse, a rising pandemic affecting youth, public workers, and increasingly, the elderly — often linked to boredom and social disconnection. “Serenity has a multidisciplinary team comprising psychologists, social workers, specialists, orthopaedics, midwives, and experts in preventing sexually transmitted diseases and managing diabetes, supports the centre’s holistic approach to health care,” Mosenki said.

Morwadi continues to explain that the collaboration with the local village development council further strengthens Serenity’s community outreach, ensuring that health and social needs are met in an integrated manner.

“As the festive season approaches, this new Day Care Centre provides much-needed relief and companionship for Botswana’s senior citizens. It ensures they are not alone, receive proper medication management, and participate in activities designed to promote mental and physical wellness”, she added.

Rhoda Mahloko, affectionately known as the First Mother, a volunteer with Serenity, plays a vital role in the centre’s programs. Sharing her motivation, she said, “Elders in the village get lonely and bored after losing their partners, hence I participated with Serenity to start a program where we can socialise and engage in life-changing conversations to help one another.”

Her work helps foster meaningful connections to improve emotional well-being among elders. She emphasised that Serenity’s impact extends beyond mental health.

The official launch event was attended by elders, dignitaries, and community leaders who expressed strong support for Serenity’s ongoing mission to awaken dignity and improve the quality of life for vulnerable populations.

With this initiative, Serenity sets a benchmark in Botswana for inclusive care that respects the needs of the elderly while addressing urgent public health challenges head-on.
