MP increases soccer sponsorship

The increased sponsorship comes shortly after Moyo collaborated with Vice President Ian Khama to finance the Tati East Independence Challenge Cup three months ago. There has been uncertainty in Matshelagabedi - a village east of Francistown - whether the MP would sponsor the Christmas tournament again. 'I have promised that this would be an annual event for as long as I am the MP for the area,' he said to dispel doubts about the tournament.

He said that basically, he is not sponsoring activities in Matshelagabedi only, but other villages in his constituency benefit from his generosity. He sponsors tournaments in Sevia, Jakalas Two, Themashanga, Tsamaya and Mabudzane. 'I do not use my money. I organise some sponsorships for such tournaments and guess what, the sponsoring companies or individuals do come to watch how their money is being utilised,' said the MP who has passion for football.

He pointed out that such tournaments keep people busy during the holidays and keep youths away from mischievous behaviour and crime. 'People, especially youths, should be kept busy during holidays. They must have something to do. When such tournaments are on, people get excited and enjoy themselves at the grounds. Therefore, they forget about other things that may land them in trouble,' said the legislator.

He added that as a political leader, he has to initiate things for the people. He has no fear that critics would deem his move as a campaign strategy for 2009 elections. He revealed that he uses his status as a politician to influence companies to finance football in rural areas. 'Christmas tournaments are not income-generating activities. So people should not believe that I want to benefit from this initiative,' said a charged Moyo.

Meanwhile, the organising committee for Matshelagabedi tournament met on Wednesday to plan for the event.

Defending champions Matlhalerwa (Wild Dogs) are expected to host the tournament. Sekokwe United will not participate in the event. This leaves Matshelagabedi United (MU), Tumediso Young Strikers and Cannibals as the challengers to Wild Dogs.
