The family was travelling in a Toyota RunX when the 48-year-old female driver reportedly lost control, causing the vehicle to leave the road and crash into a culvert, trapping all occupants inside.
District Traffic Officer, Superintendent Obonetse Matshego, confirmed the accident, saying five people were on board. A 23-year-old woman, a 13-year-old girl, and a nine-year-old girl died at the scene, along with the driver, whilst the youngest passenger, a five-year-old girl, survived, sustaining serious injuries.
Matshego said the little girl was rushed to Bokamoso Private Hospital, where she remains hospitalised.
“We received the report of the accident around 2 pm. It appears that the driver lost control of the vehicle, which ended up hitting a culvert, leaving the occupants trapped inside. Only one, a five-year-old girl, survived, and she is still in the hospital with serious injuries,” he detailed the incident.
Matshego added that the family was travelling from Gaborone towards Ramotswa when they were involved in the fatal crash. He urged motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads, emphasising that even a brief loss of concentration can cost lives.
Police investigations into the exact cause of the accident are ongoing.
