The event brought together dignitaries, sports officials, athletes and supporters highlighting Botswana’s commitment to developing young sports talent. It was graced by distinguished guests including the acting Minister of Sport and Arts, Lawrence Ookeditse and Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) president, Tshepo Sitale.

Their attendance symbolised strong government and institutional support for the youth athletes representing Botswana on an international stage.

Sitale highlighted the significance of the African Youth Games as a crucial development platform for young athletes aged between 14 and 17 years.

In his address, he underscored that the event is not only about winning medals but also fosters personal growth, sportsmanship, friendship and representing Botswana with dignity.

The BNOC president encouraged young athletes to embrace the ‘joy of effort’ rather than focusing solely on getting medals. He said that knowing that you did your absolute best gives joy.

Sitale emphasised the African Youth Games as a vital step in Botswana’s broader sports vision, nurturing a generation prepared for future global competitions such as the Youth Commonwealth Games and Youth Olympics.

“We want our athletes to enjoy their experience, compete with honor, and carry the pride of Botswana on their shoulders,” he remarked.

Athletes must focus on the joy of effort and invaluable experience gained through participation, he added.

The send-off event also featured vibrant entertainment that celebrated the spirit of the Youth and Botswana’s sporting culture. The mood was upbeat and purposeful, ensuring the occasion was both focused and inspiring.

Acting Minister, Ookeditse congratulated the athletes on their selection and called upon them to take pride in their role as ambassadors of Botswana.

He encouraged the young stars to fully embrace the experience and to make the best of the opportunity to learn, compete and grow.

As the countdown to the African Youth Games begins, team Botswana departs with a strong support system and a clear message: success is measured not only by medals but by courage, effort and a commitment to representing Botswana with honor on an international stage.
