Kanye unites to transform HIV AIDS fight

The Minister of Health, Dr. Stephen Modise, officiated the ceremony, highlighting important national developments and ongoing challenges in the HIV/AIDS response. Addressing attendees, Dr. Modise emphasised the government’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure in Kanye.
He announced plans to build a new hospital through a private partnership model, noting that a suitable plot has already been identified. This initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance local healthcare services and support communities affected by HIV/AIDS. The Minister also assured the public that antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) would be consistently available.
He detailed ongoing collaborations with private entities to maintain uninterrupted access to treatment, crucial for managing HIV and improving the quality of life for those living with the virus. Special guests at the event included Ontiretse Letlhare, leader of the National AIDS and Health Promotion Agency (NAHPA), Prince Mosanana, the Member of Parliament for Kanye, representative from UNAIDS, Alankar Malviya, representative for The World Health Organization for Botswana, Dr. Fabian Ndenzako. Their presence underscored the importance of multi-sectoral partnerships in tackling the epidemic.
One of the event’s most moving moments was a testimony from Khumoetsile Thukwi, whose story challenged lingering stigma around HIV/AIDS and inspired attendees to view the disease differently. Her experience underscored the theme of the day, “Overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response.” World AIDS Day in Botswana serves as a vital platform each year to update the nation on HIV/AIDS status, increase public understanding, and promote prevention, treatment, and care.
By reducing stigma and fostering community action, the day reinforces Botswana’s dedication to combating HIV/AIDS. The event further reiterated the importance of collective action among government bodies, NGOs, and communities to sustain progress made so far.
It reflected on national achievements in expanding access to treatment and prevention services, marking a significant milestone in Botswana’s long-term fight against the epidemic.
