Palapye Assistant Police Station Commander Goletwa Kethamile confirmed the incident, stating that the victim is a 27-year-old Zimbabwean woman who was walking alone from her home in Extension 10 heading to work in the village centre.
Kethamile said the attack occurred shortly after 7 am when the woman met a stranger along the road. The man allegedly pounced on her, dragged her into a nearby bush and raped her.
Narrating what transpired, Kethamile said the victim reported that the suspect was wearing a balaclava. He allegedly grabbed and dragged her into the bushes, threatened her with a knife, raped her and fled immediately afterwards.
“We have launched a probe to locate the suspect, who is still at large. Extension 10 is an area with newly developed plots and still has a lot of bush. We urge members of the public to avoid walking alone, as criminals continue to target people in this area,” he said.
Kethamile added that whilst police continue to patrol the area, they are unable to cover the entire stretch at all times due to its size. He further appealed to men to respect women, emphasising that women have the same rights as men to move freely without fear of violence.
“Women deserve to walk freely just like their male counterparts. They must be respected and not denied their right to safety and freedom,” he added.
Police investigations into the matter are ongoing.
