The ward has only two polling stations, namely Moreomaoto Primary School and a tent at Menoakwena mobile stop.

The by-election comes shortly following the passing of the area's former councillor, who died due to a brief illness.

Consequently, political activity in the ward has intensified, as parties and independent contenders position themselves for what is expected to be a highly competitive race.

The candidates vying for the seat are Basiami Odirile of the Botswana Congress Party (BCP), Dikaelo Mphaphi of the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) and Mabego Gaoletlhoo of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP).

Additionally, their participation not only broadens the field but also introduces an element of unpredictability, as independent contenders have recently shown increasing influence amongst some other parts of the ward.

During the 2024 General Elections, the BDP secured victory with 217 votes, followed closely by the UDC with 185 votes.

The BCP trailed behind with 50 votes and out of 545 validly registered voters, 459 cast their ballots, resulting in an impressive voter turnout of 84%.

The numbers suggest that the ward's electorate is highly engaged and likely to participate actively once again.

Meanwhile, The Monitor has observed heightened political activity throughout the weekend, as all competing parties descended upon Moremaoto to canvass for support. Campaign teams were seen moving door-to-door, holding community meetings, and engaging residents in discussions about key issues affecting the ward.

As a result, the atmosphere has become increasingly charged, whilst each candidate is striving to gain a final advantage before polling day.

Nevertheless, it remains to be seen whether the BDP will successfully retain the seat. Although the party won in 2024, the margin was not overwhelming, which leaves room for possible shifts in voter sentiment. Furthermore, the presence of two independent candidates adds another layer of complexity.

Their efforts on the ground indicate that they should not be underestimated, as they too are working tirelessly to convince voters that they offer credible alternatives to party-affiliated contenders.

Ultimately, Saturday’s by-election promises to be a closely contested event. With strong voter interest, active campaigns, and a diverse slate of candidates, the outcome is far from predictable.
