Directed by Daris Kamwi, the event was themed ‘A Musical Journey Around the World,’ and showcased 21 performances that celebrated the musical traditions of Ukraine, Germany, Africa, China, and beyond. Each act highlighted the unique rhythms, instruments, and heritage of its origin, offering the audience an immersive experience in world music.
The evening began with a powerful African segment, led by Hillary who captivated the crowd with a stirring rendition of “MALAIKA”, a song famously popularised by Mariam Makeba and Harry Belafonte, and known for its angelic lyrics and uplifting melody.
The African tunes continued to dominate the event, but the orchestra skillfully blended in other global sounds, including a memorable bagpipe performance by Sally, which brought the spirit of Scottish culture to life.
The crowd’s delight was evident, especially during Clyde and Maya’s performance of “Baba Yetu,” Christopher Tin’s Grammy-winning Swahili version of the Lord’s Prayer, which resonated with both spiritual and cultural significance.
As the evening progressed, the audience was treated to a diverse array of music, from the energetic beats of Ukraine to the delicate melodies of China.
The event’s finale featured Sally and Tiyapo, who joined the orchestra for a moving rendition of “Jerusalem,” a song that has become a symbol of unity and hope, especially during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic.
The performance left the audience inspired and uplifted, a testament to the power of music to bring people together across cultures.
The success of the event was made possible by the support of several sponsors, including Maswabi Law, BAMAS, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Gaborone, and Paradise Melody Instruments.
Their contributions ensured that the event was not only a celebration of global music but also a demonstration of community collaboration and cultural exchange.
The Gaborone Community Orchestra and Thorn Hill Primary School have set a new benchmark for inclusive and entertaining musical events, proving that music truly knows no borders.
