Bowls team debuts at Atlantic Senior Fours

The team that comprises of four players will jet off on Saturday.

Hosted at the Constantinou Bros Hotels’ Athena Royal Beach hotel in Paphos, the competition will be staged with a spectacular backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea. The World Bowls approved bowls competition started yesterday and will conclude on December 12.

The event will host 22 international teams and is organised by Bowls Cyprus. It will feature three main categories, Men’s Fours, Women’s Fours and Mixed Fours.

BBA vice president, Marea Modutlwa, told Sport Monitor that the team of two women and two men will leave for Cyprus on Saturday and will roll out their campaign on December 9.

The team comprises Dennis Olaotse, Chakale Robert, Anand Rangaswamy, Tendani Gaolathe and managed by Audrey Olaotse.

“This is a seniors tournament, players who are older than 55 years. Three of the players, Dennis, Rangaswamy and Gaolathe have been bowling for under three years, so our expectation is for them to gain valuable experience and to qualify for the knockout stages,” Modutlwa said.

“Next edition of this tournament will be in 2027, where we intend to field a full team of four women and four men.”

She explained that the Men’s Fours and Women’s Fours will run concurrently during the first part of the tournament, starting with sectional play followed by knockout stages (quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals).

The mixed fours will start after the conclusion of the men’s and women’s finals and follows the same format of sectional play leading to knockout rounds.

Some of the nations expected to send strong teams include Australia, Scotland and England. The three countries boosts of wealth of international experience.

Sparks are expected to fly following the successful the 2023 edition with participation from 12 nations from across the globe, Czech Republic, Cyprus, England, Guernsey, Jersey, Norfolk Islands, Scotland, South Africa, Switzerland, USA, Wales and Zimbabwe.

The same countries that competed at the 2023 event have confirmed participation, and the number has increased following the attendance by Botswana, Namibia and Spain.
