The announcement was made during the sixth annual Choppies Long Service Awards, where the company also recognised employees for 10, 15, and 20 years of dedicated service.
Speaking at the award ceremony held on Friday evening, Choppies Group Head of Human Resources, Molatedi Kgotla, highlighted that the initiative is part of Choppies’ long-standing commitment to staff welfare, which previously included the rollout of the P4,000 minimum living wage.
“We are excited to soon roll out yet another initiative for our employees, a housing scheme that will help them secure a sustainable future,” he said.
Explaining the scheme, Sebaga Manyapetsa, Builders Mart ambassador, said that the programme will operate through Builders Mart, a Choppies Group company. Employees will be able to access loans for building materials to construct their own houses.
“We at Choppies value the acquisition of assets, and it is fitting that our employees should own houses. The scheme will benefit not only the individual staff members, but also their families, local builders, and the broader community,” she said.
Interested employees will need to provide relevant documentation, including proof of land ownership, or, if building on someone else’s plot, an affidavit from the landowner confirming consent. Loans will carry an attractive interest rate of just 10%, making homeownership more accessible.
The housing scheme follows another major Choppies initiative: the 22nd edition of the company’s annual Big Birthday Bonanza competition. Announced last month, the competition will award the grand prize winner a fully furnished two-bedroom house in Block 6, Gaborone. These efforts reinforce Choppies’ ethos of giving back to both employees and the communities in which it operates.
Kgotla emphasised that the scheme complements the company’s other employee-focused programmes, such as graduate training initiatives, and reflects Choppies’ belief that recognising staff starts with ensuring their security, well-being, and growth prospects.
“Choppies remains committed to investing in our people and building a workplace where long service is not only appreciated but truly celebrated,” he said.
