The latest incident comes as motor vehicle theft continues to plague Greater Gaborone, with Honda Fit and Mazda Demio models remaining prime targets for criminals. According to law enforcement officials, the Gabane theft occurred on Saturday night whilst the car was parked outside a bar.
Mogoditshane Police Station commander, Superintendent Mbiganyi Letsholathebe, said the vehicle belonged to a 31-year-old man from Kgosing ward at the same village.
The victim had reportedly parked his car at around 9pm outside Blue Dot Bar, but upon returning an hour later, it had vanished.
“He had his car keys with him, but the vehicle was nowhere to be found,” Letsholathebe explained.
“We have since launched a probe to locate the stolen black Honda Fit, and we are pleading with members of the community to assist with any information that could help us make a breakthrough.”
He noted that the growing number of car theft cases, particularly involving Honda Fit and Mazda Demio models, concern them in their policing area.
Letsholathebe urged owners of the targeted models to stay vigilant, especially when parking at entertainment spots or leaving their vehicles outside their homes at night.
“In some instances, these vehicles are stolen whilst parked at home at night, and in other cases, at entertainment places,” he added.
The station commander said emerging patterns suggest that criminals may have established a market for the vehicles both locally and outside the country.
“Some of the cars are stolen and stripped for parts, indicating an active demand for components. Others are likely trafficked across borders.
“We are still investigating cases in which some of the stolen vehicles were never recovered,” Letsholathebe said. He encouraged motorists to install additional security devices, such as alarm systems, tracking units, and steering locks, to reduce their vulnerability.
