UDC clinches Kgalagadi South in rain-soaked election

The Member of Parliament (MP) seat became vacant after the death of the late area MP, Dr Micus Chimbombi. According to returning officer Levis Thupa, UDC candidate Tokyo Modise emerged as the winner after receiving 6,766 votes. This outcome places the UDC well ahead of its competitors, reflecting strong voter support across the constituency.
In second place was Diana Kaartze of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) with 3,926 votes. She was followed by Tshepang Brooks of the Botswana Congress Party (BCP), who secured 946 votes. Phenyo Sedimonyane of the Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF) garnered 99 votes, whilst independent candidate Kavari Kapeko received 116 votes. Thupa also confirmed that 46 votes were spoiled and accounted for during verification.
Regarding the election process, Thupa explained that voting proceeded smoothly overall, despite challenges brought by heavy rainfall. He said the downpour affected some polling stations and caused delays for a few voters. As a remedy, however, officials extended voting hours at the impacted stations to ensure that everyone had an opportunity to cast their ballot.
Apart from the weather, Thupa noted that the elections ran efficiently and on schedule. 'However, turnout was lower than anticipated. The reduced numbers may have been due to rainfall, as well as community events such as weddings and burials that coincided with the polling day. In total, 11,904 people participated in the election. Additionally, 9,158 ballot papers remained unused, 13 were spoiled during the final verification process, and 19,226 were issued overall,' he said in an interview on Sunday.
Thupa expressed gratitude to both residents and stakeholders for their cooperation throughout the election period. He emphasised that their support and patience contributed significantly to the peaceful and well-coordinated voting process. 'The dedication of election officials and community members helped ensure a smooth outcome, despite weather-related obstacles,' he said.
With the final results confirmed, the UDC victory marks an important political milestone for Kgalagadi South. As Modise prepares to take up his role as the constituency’s representative, residents will be looking forward to how his new leadership will respond to local needs.
