Record in sight as Sesinyi finds early form

After scoring in his team’s 3-2 comeback win over Matebele FC on Sunday, he is quietly building a case as one of the biggest individual achievers in Botswana football. This will make him achieve a feat of being a player with the most goals in a league season. Sesinyi struck just before half time to level matters at 1–1, a goal that helped Galaxy climb to second in the FNB Premiership standings.
More importantly, it pushed his tally to 11 goals in nine matches, giving him a sharp scoring rate of 1.2 goals per game. At this pace, the league record held by Terence Mandaza suddenly looks within reach.
Mandaza set the benchmark of 31 goals during the 2009-10 season, scoring at a rate of 1.14 per game in the 27 games he turned out in.
For more than a decade, no striker has come close, but Sesinyi’s numbers are already tracking ahead of that historic run.
The figures are forcibly putting him right in the conversation early in to the 2025-2026 FNB Premiership.
As expected, talk has now turned to whether he can actually beat the long-standing record. Fans and pundits alike are already doing the math.
Coaches are keeping a close eye. And defenders are probably checking the fixture list with a bit more concern than usual as the forward does not look to be taking his foot off the paddle soon with a brilliant start to this season.
His closest rivals in this season's golden boot race, Tefo Mofokeng and Thatayaone Kgamanyane of Mochudi Centre Chiefs and Gaborone United (GU) respectively did not increase their tallies as their sides played to a 0-0 draw on Friday evening.
BDF’s striking prospect, Boikobo Rannyena, moved third on the charts with five goals with a goal in the 2-2 draw against Township Rollers.
Sesinyi, however, is not getting carried away as he prioritises team success over personal triumphs.
“I do not want to be head over heels about that. But the way I have started, the goal is on track to reach the target or surpass the target.
“There is no pressure because my biggest target is to help the team and that would come as a personal success,' he said.
The 33-year-old forward's highest tally in a season is 24 goals and remains a record by a local player and tied to Malepa Bolelang's return two decades ago, in the 2005-2006.
The 24-goal mark in the third highest in the local league as Zimbabwean striker, Master Masitara's 27 goals in the 2008-2009 campaign is second the Mandaza’s untouchable 31 goals mark.
Still, with nine games played and 11 goals already tucked away, it is becoming harder to ignore the signs.
Sesinyi is on pace, his consistency, confidence in front of goal seems to grow each week as Galaxy push GU to the title early on.
