The South African-based animal-health and pet-nutrition business recently acquired Biofarms in a deal that marks a significant step for the Botswana company, which identified Nutribyte as a natural fit with its mission to enhance animal health and wellbeing through science-based solutions. The re-entry is a culmination of a successful pilot launch at the height of the COVID-19 period, and Bio Farms, a key player in the local veterinary and pet care supply chain, has begun distributing Nutribyte pet nutrition products through Sefalana stores across the country. The varieties that are now available in local stores include Nutribyte Adult Maintenance 22%, Nutribyte Large Breed Puppy 26%, Nutribyte SB Adult Maintenance 22%, and Nutribyte Small Breed Puppy 28%.

Mosotswana Distributors has also introduced a range of dog treats, including 500-gram and 1-kilogram bags of biscuits, to meet the needs of local pet owners. Bio Farms’ Business Development Officer, Rozelle Taljaard, said Nutribyte’s success is rooted in science and quality. “Nutribyte stands out because it’s developed with veterinary input and manufactured in a world-class facility that meets international standards. “Every recipe is carefully balanced to give pets exactly what they need, nothing less, nothing more,” she explained. Taljaard added that the brand prioritises high-quality ingredients and scientifically backed formulations. “Our formulations include functional nutrients such as prebiotics, beta-glucans, and omega fatty acids for overall health. “It’s premium nutrition that remains accessible to pet owners,” she explained. Produced in an HACCP-approved, ISO-certified facility, Nutribyte prides itself on upholding strict quality control standards.

The product may be priced slightly higher than some retail brands, but Taljaard emphasized that it delivers real value. “We don’t compromise on raw material standards, and that naturally costs a little more. Pet owners see the value because pets thrive on Nutribyte with better digestion, stronger immunity, and healthier coats. This often means fewer vet visits in the long run,” she added. In South Africa, Nutribyte has recorded consistent growth, particularly in the veterinary sector and independent pet stores, earning a reputation for reliability and results. The brand’s expansion beyond South Africa into Botswana and other African markets reflects increasing regional demand for premium pet nutrition. Local consumers can now expect improved access and product variety through Bio Farms’ established distribution network. “Because it combines the best of both worlds — Nutribyte’s trusted, vet-formulated pet nutrition and Bio Farms’ strong infrastructure — this partnership will allow us to grow the brand, introduce new ideas, and ensure pet owners always have access to reliable, premium pet food at competitive value,” Taljaard said.

The global pet care market is also on an upward trajectory. According to Grand View Research Inc. of San Francisco, the market was valued at $150.67 billion in 2021 and is projected to reach $236.16 billion by 2030, growing at a compound annual rate of 5.1 percent. The rise of pet humanisation and increasing household spending on pet care products continue to drive global and regional growth. In Botswana, the growing interest in pet ownership is influenced by a combination of lifestyle and security considerations. With busier urban lifestyles and less time to prepare fresh meals for pets, ready-made dog food options like Nutribyte offer a convenient, balanced alternative for households juggling work, family, and caregiving responsibilities. Bio Farms is also extending its commitment to community engagement. The company will sponsor prizes at the upcoming Botswana Boerboel Show and Appraisal, scheduled for November 7 to 8, 2025, at Nelly’s Garden in Mmanoko.

“Bio Farms believes in responsible dog ownership, and supporting the Boerboel Show aligns with our mission of contributing to meaningful community development,” said Sello Motseta, Director of Mosotswana Distributors, local suppliers of Nutribyte and Bio Farms pet care products. Motseta, himself a registered Boerboel breeder with the South African Boerboel Breeders Society (SABBS), highlighted the importance of proper nutrition for large breeds. “A lactating adult female, for example, needs a higher protein diet to produce sufficient milk. Our products, such as Natural Endurance and Mother Miracle, provide 30% protein for this reason. Big dogs like Boerboels thrive on a protein-rich diet,” he added. Motseta cautioned consumers against choosing dog food solely based on price, emphasizing the importance of checking protein content and ingredient quality. “Cheaper is not always better. It’s about the long-term well-being of your dog,” he said. Nutribyte pet care products are now available at Sefalana outlets in Block 3, G/West Industrial, Commerce Park, Mogoditshane, Nkoyaphiri, Crossing Mall, Molapo Crossing, Setlhoa, and Broadhurst offering local pet owners convenient access to premium, science-backed pet nutrition.
