Born Odirile Sento, the artist is no stranger to charity work. He has over the years supported deserving families with food parcels. However this time around, Vee decided to do things differently, organising a music show featuring local artists, where entry tickets were replaced with food parcel donations.
The event, held on Saturday at the Notwane Grounds, attracted a sizeable audience.
“The show had two aims: first, to instill the spirit of giving among Batswana, and secondly, to use my brand to attract others to join me in this charity drive while enjoying good music,” said Vee when explaining the idea behind the initiative.
Although the event cost him around half a million pula to organise, the artisit says he is proud of the outcome.
“The only challenge is that we used our own money. We spent close to half a million just to put everything together, which was tough, but I believe next time we will have more sponsors on board.
“We have managed to gather a lot of food, enough to support about 40 families,” he explained.
Vee further revealed that going forward, a percentage of proceeds from all his performances will go towards his charity foundation.
“This is going to be an annual event. If possible, we would like to have two editions a year. It breaks my heart to see people suffering. I know I cannot help everyone, but I do what I can and I want others to see that they can do the same. It should not just be me,” he said.
On how the 40 families will be selected, Vee explained that his team already has a list of families who have reached out for assistance.
“We will choose from those who have contacted us for help. For now, we will focus on families in and around Gaborone because of logistical challenges, but in future we will extend our reach across the country,” he said.
The line up included performances from Juu Matere, Han C, Dalom Kids, Franco and Afro musica and the man himself, Vee Mampeezy just to mention but a few.
