The suspect was nabbed during a stop–question–and–search joint operation conducted by the Botswana Police Service, Department of Immigration and the Botswana Defence Force (BDF).
Martin’s Drift Acting Police Station commander, Assistant Superintendent Uyapo Koketso, said the suspect was driving a vehicle towing a trailer when officers discovered the illicit cargo concealed amongst the luggage.
“The substances, which were wrapped in 50kg plastic bags, were hidden inside the trailer with other items,” he said.
Koketso added that the police will this week send the substances for testing and analysis at the police forensic laboratory, whilst the suspect remains in custody to assist with investigations.
He expressed concern over the rising numbers of similar cases involving travellers from South Africa allegedly transporting dagga to Zimbabwe through Botswana.
“We are worried because almost every week we register cases of people attempting to smuggle dagga through our borders on their way to Zimbabwe.
“There is suspicion that people may have established a market for dagga in Zimbabwe,” Koketso said.
Police have since intensified cross-border operations aimed at curbing drug trafficking.
