The robbers, who reportedly threatened the workers with what appeared to be a firearm and sharp objects, tied the attendants’ hands and legs using shoelaces before raiding the premises.
Sojwe Police Station commander, Superintendent Busang Malope, said officers on routine patrol became suspicious after noticing unusual inactivity at the filling station.
The suspicion was raised because staff would normally be seen outside the premises.
“Upon approaching the building, the suspects fled the crime scene, abandoning bags loaded with stolen goods,” Malope said.
He said police managed to recover nearly 90% of the stolen property, including P3,000 in cash, beverages, cigarettes and other items believed to have been taken from the store.
“We have since launched investigations to locate and arrest the suspects who are still at large,” he added.
Malope added that, despite threats, the employees were not physically harmed. He said the victims received trauma treatment and have since returned to work.
Police are appealing to members of the public with information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects to come forward.
