Lions made their 10th league game appearance since their existence and the weekend’s defeat is the fifth as they remain in the bottom half of the log standings.

They have had a good run of form but could not handle the heat from the red hot GU side.

Lions were caught napping early and allowed Thabo Maponda to give GU the lead on the fifth minute.

The defending champions went 2-0 up with three minutes to the break as Karabo Phiri slotted in Alphord Velaphi’s cross. Lions trailed 2-0 at the break.

Lions were pegged further back with two minutes into the second half as GU extended the lead to three goals thanks to a Sheikh Sesay strike.

The Liberian midfielder, bagged his brace as he tucked in Omphile Ramoagi’s cross on the 65th minute. With their biggest defeat in history, Da Gama has said his side needs to fix defensive mistakes and potentially be a better side.

“If you look at it, three mistakes from the four goals, one goal was a very good goal. We knew they are strong in the final third. They have players that can score goals there, Kgamanyane last season scored 15. This is a team that is solid, very good in their approach.

“We are just happy that we put youngsters in there. So if it was not for the mistakes, I think 1-0 or, I do not know, or maybe a 1-1 but I think the mistakes we made are not good enough for this level,” Da Gama said.
