LSB rallies behind Justice Dingake for ICJ appointment

In a new statement supporting his nomination, the LSB described Justice Dingake as a jurist of ‘unquestionable integrity, intellectual depth, and unwavering commitment to justice.’
“Justice Dingake’s lifelong dedication to the rule of law, human rights, and constitutionalism principles has not only defined his career but also elevated Botswana’s reputation in international legal circles,” reads the endorsement statement.
The LSB stated that Justice Dingake’s nomination by the government marks a proud moment for the country, positioning one of its most accomplished legal minds for service on the world’s highest judicial body.
His distinguished career spans continents, courts, and causes from his time as a Judge of the High Court of Botswana to his tenure at the Supreme and National Courts of Papua New Guinea, and later as a Justice of the Residual Special Court for Sierra Leone.
According to the Law Society, these experiences have shaped a jurist whose understanding of justice transcends borders, and his work, both on the bench and in academia, has reflected a profound respect for international law, comparative constitutionalism, and the universality of human dignity.
Justice Dingake's judgments are known for their clarity, rigorous analysis, and moral conviction, qualities that have earned him respect from legal practitioners and scholars across Africa and the Commonwealth.

The Law Society noted that Dingake's jurisprudence has often served as a guiding light in the development of constitutional interpretation within Botswana and beyond, with several of his judgments being cited as persuasive authority in other Commonwealth jurisdictions.
“Beyond the courtroom, Justice Dingake has been a tireless advocate for human rights and constitutional development. His scholarly work, including publications on constitutional democracy, access to justice, and judicial ethics, continues to shape contemporary debates on governance and the rule of law,” said LSB.
Furthermore, the LSB said that as a prolific author and lecturer, Justice Dingake has contributed to building a stronger culture of constitutionalism and legal ethics throughout Africa and the Pacific.
The Society also alluded that his influence, however, extends far beyond academia. Justice Dingake has served in key leadership roles such as Chairperson of the African Judicial Network and Deputy Judge President of the National and Supreme Courts of Papua New Guinea.
“In these roles, he has promoted judicial cooperation and mentorship, helping to shape a new generation of judges grounded in integrity and human rights principles, and his mentorship of young jurists, the Society noted, stands as a testament to his enduring belief in the power of law to transform societies,” reads part of the statement about his work.
Internationally, Justice Dingake’s reputation as a fair-minded and empathetic jurist has earned him recognition from his peers across the globe. Holding advanced degrees, including a Doctorate in Law, he has lectured widely on topics ranging from international law to judicial independence and the role of courts in upholding democracy.
His ability to blend academic insight with practical judicial experience makes him, in the words of the Society, “an ideal candidate for a global bench that demands both intellect and humanity.”
What distinguishes Justice Dingake, according to the Law Society, is not merely his professional excellence but his moral authority, pointing out that throughout his career, he has demonstrated a rare combination of courage and humility,y standing firm on matters of principle even in politically charged contexts.
LSB emphasised that his record of impartiality and integrity has helped reinforce public confidence in the judiciary, both at home and abroad.
In its endorsement of Dingake, the Law Society emphasised that Justice his nomination represents more than an individual achievement; it symbolises Botswana’s steadfast commitment to the values that underpin the international legal order.
His appointment to the ICJ, the Society said, would not only bring honor to Botswana but also strengthen Africa’s voice within one of the most important institutions for global peace and justice.
The Society’s statement was unequivocal in its praise: “Justice Dingake’s career reflects the very best of Botswana’s legal tradition, respect for the rule of law, dedication to service, and belief in the inherent dignity of all people.
“His appointment to the International Court of Justice would reaffirm Africa’s growing leadership in shaping the global discourse on justice and human rights,” noted the LSB.
If appointed, Justice Dingake would join an esteemed group of jurists tasked with settling disputes between nations and providing advisory opinions on complex questions of international law.
For Botswana, the nomination is seen by many as a step in the right direction for the judiciary, as it represents a significant stride in its contribution to global governance.
