The duo, a man aged 50 and a woman aged 26, were arrested on Saturday during a routine search at the border.

Martin’s Drift Police Station acting commander, Assistant Superintendent Uyapo Koketso explained that during the search, substances suspected to be dagga were recovered inside their luggage.

“The substances, weighing about 600 grams, were found hidden inside their bags.

“We have since seized them, and they will be taken for further weighing and analysis at the police laboratory to confirm their nature,” he said.

Koketso added that both suspects are currently in police custody, assisting with investigations.

He further expressed concern over the increasing number of similar cases involving Zimbabwean nationals at the border post.

“We continue to record cases where Zimbabweans are found transporting suspected dagga through Botswana,” Koketso said.

“It appears Botswana is being used as a transit route to smuggle dagga from South Africa to Zimbabwe.”

According to him, last week alone, police recorded three separate incidents involving Zimbabwean nationals found with large quantities of suspected dagga.

“In some cases, they hide the substances inside buckets containing food, pretending to be carrying groceries,” he said.
