Malesu received one vote during the BNOC board elections where Tshepo Sitale emerged as the victor, scooping 20 votes followed by Yarona Sharp who was voted by nine delegates.
Following the polls, Malesu told Sport Monitor that for now leaders of sport have spoken.
“I wish I knew why voters keep rejecting me,” he said. “Maybe they did not understand my campaign clearly but I will not give up. I believe that one I will win, absolutely,” he said.
For her part, Sharp told Sport Monitor that she was extremely proud of herself and grateful for the support from her family, friends and colleagues and mostly importantly her campaign team.
“I wish the victor well. I am a sport leader. I am not going anywhere and I have a lot to give to sport,” Sharp said.
Reflecting on his victory, Sitale said the sport fraternity has spoken, indicating their preference and believed that they heard his message of continuity.
“I am excited but I am cognisant of the work that lies ahead. In a month and a half, there is Youth Games in Angola and in nine months we have the Commonwealth Games.
“Other countries have started preparations and we have not started. It means we should double our efforts,” he said.
Sitale added that one of the critical things in the first 100 days is the groundbreaking for the BNOC headquarters.
He said they have a mammoth task of raising funds to augment the government subvention to adequately prepare the teams.
Wrestling president, Moagi Sharp who lost to Michael Moroka for the senior vice president position dismissed the elections saying the process was not fair.
He said it all started with the vetting process which is the main thing and transparency. Sharp was voted by seven delegates while Moroka received 23 votes.
“The elections committee was not transparent. There was also an element of intimidation of codes who nominate candidates, some codes were threatened by some sitting board members who did not want to be challenged,” he said.
Meanwhile, speculation was rife that a former member of Athletes Commission, Oteng Oteng voted.
Some members felt the chairperson of the newly elected members of the Commission should have been the one voting.
Elections committee chairperson, Charmaine Koveya told Sport Monitor that Oteng is in the Athletes Commission, and in the BNOC Board for that reason.
She explained that when it came to voting, he was eligible to vote as prescribed by the BNOC constitution.
“If he is still the Commission’s representative, then he will continue with the new Board like it happened previously. “But if there is a new representative, that person will be the one seating in the Board representing that Commission. They follow a different platform of elections,” she said.
When asked if the Athletes Commission mandate was not dissolved when the Board was dissolved, Koveya explained that she is not part of the process.
Hence, she did not want to share misleading information, rather the BNOC was in a better place to respond.
For his part, Sitale explained that the new Athletes Commission is not complete until the new board elects two board members into the current committee (then the their Commission will seat and elect their chairperson.
'The board was dissolved but the athletes chairperson remains until the new chairperson is elected. Because his tenure is not based on elections but based on the athletes Commission statutes,' he said.
