The Reds shifted their focus to the local league after their elimination from the CAF Champions League last month.
They won their midweek tie away to Sua Flamingoes and made it two wins in two games over the weekend. It was rather a slower start to the tie but GU looked the better of the two teams.
The Money Machine, however, could not use the minimal chances they had in the first half while the opposition despite some moments of brightness did not produce an opening goal.
The two teams were locked at 0-0 at the break.
Matebele took a shocking lead early in the second half. Caleb Manu-Ofori on the edge of the box dropped his marker with a show of tricky feet and laid on to Yashe Dambe who slotted home on the 53rd minute.
The Reds had a swift response with Thatayaone Kgamanyane nodding in Mothusi Johnson’s freekick to level the scores. It was 2-1 for GU on the 78th minute thanks to Thabo Maponda's quick reaction inside the box.
The goalkeeper had spilled Lebogang Ditsile’s long effort unto Sheikh Sesay’s path whose attempt was blocked by the defence but fell unto Maponda who slotted home for GU’s second. Kgamanyane got his brace in the final minute of additional time as he tucked from close range after the keeper made a save on Karabo Phiri's attempt.
“This win showed us that we gave the dedication, we work as a team, we are one family and we work for each.
“We were winning 2-1 but you could see that we wanted to score more, that is why we could score the third goal,” said Ninyonzima.
