Organisers of Mmakgodumo cultural festival held a press briefing recently to give update about the upcoming event PIC.KENNEDY RAMOKONE

This weekend’s event marks the 10th edition of the festival since its inception, promising to be a vibrant showcase of Ngwaketse tradition and cultural pride. Bathoen Trust secretary, Taolo Mogobe, emphasised the event’s mission , which he said it is to preserve and uphold Botswana’s rich cultural heritage, especially that of the Bangwaketse.

“This year’s theme, ‘Ngwao Lore Seikokotlelo’, reflects a new commitment to learning diverse aspects of Ngwaketse tribe-ensuring that their traditional customs, music and crafts are passed down to younger generations,” he told a media briefing.

During the briefing officials highlighted some performances to look out for including those from Ditiro Leero, Mmaausi, Swailaman and displays of traditional foods and crafts.

Mogobe noted that in 2024, their main focus was to showcase Dikgafela. He said this year, their main focus has shifted a bit to Bangwaketse’s traditional wedding.

“Last year, we showcased more depth into Dikgafela in order for the people to grasp what there is to know about Dikgafela.

“However, this year Mmakgodumo cultural event will focus on Ngwaketse culture, their wedding to be precise. This showcase will be real as there will be the groom and the bride, and every tradition of Bangwaketse will be performed to show how they perform their weddings,” he stated.

He further emphasised that preparations are going well towards making the event a success.

“We have four wards- Kgwatlheng, Mafhikana, Mongala and Ga Sebako working with us on this event.

“We are putting Mmakgodumo site out there for people in and outside Botswana to see it as an attraction site, therefore trying to bring investors to the area since the place is a fund raiser for Bathoen Trust.

“As a result, we believe this reason alone, should be more than enough to make someone outside Botswana to come and view this beautiful place,” he added.
